American fast food brands make little headway on chicken welfare standards

NEW YORK, July 20, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Today, World Animal Protection, a global nonprofit animal welfare organization with offices in 13 countries has released a new report that lays out the chicken welfare policies of the biggest fast food chains, such as KFC, McDonalds and Burger King.

“Pecking order 2021” ranks the performance of global fast food restaurants based on their commitment, ambition and transparency regarding chicken welfare in their global supply chains. In addition to the global ranking, World Animal Protection this year published several country-specific reports ranking companies according to their commitments in each market. These reports illustrate the great disparity in social commitments by region and the overall failure of global companies to establish and work towards global commitments.

For the American rankings, half of the eight companies assessed (KFC, Nando’s, Domino’s and Pizza Hut) scored “very poor” (the lowest possible rating), meaning consumers may unwittingly purchase meat from chickens that are subject to unnecessary suffering and cruelty. The other half (Starbucks, Subway, Burger King, and McDonald’s) fell under the “growing” category, but no company has made it into the chicken welfare leader in the US market.

The main conclusions of the US results are as follows:

  • Two companies do not receive any points in the American ranking: Nando’s and Domino’s.
  • Three companies – Starbucks, Subway, and Burger King – score relatively high in the United States. Starbucks and Subway both get 67% and Burger King 54%. All three have obtained a level 3 ranking (in progress).
  • McDonald’s receives 43%, also gaining level 3 (in progress).
  • KFC and Pizza Hut both receive 6%, falling into level 6 (very low). It is disappointing that they both score so badly in the US, given that they have subscribed to BCC in other markets. These companies must ensure that their values ​​are aligned globally and take a stand to improve the welfare of chickens by joining the BCC in the United States.
