I am the author of three books: two novels, The Service of Clouds and The Lost Thoughts of Soldiers, and Sydney, a personal story of my hometown. These books have been nominated for national and international awards, including the Miles Franklin Award, the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize (Asia-Pacific Division), the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards (non-fiction) and the National Biography Award. Sydney won the CAL Waverley Llibrary (Nib) Award in 2011. My short stories and essays have been collected extensively in publications such as Penguin Century of Australian Stories and Macquarie PEN Anthology of Australian Literature and have won awards including, more recently, the 2018 Walkley-Pascall Prize for Art Criticism. My most recent book is Signs and Wonders: Dispatches from a Time of Beauty and Loss.
