LB Josh Bynes returns to one-year contract; CB Chris Westry goes to the Panthers – The Athletic

The Ravens free agent stalker has been on hiatus for many months. But with the start of the league’s new year, it’s time to revive it. This will be the place to learn more about the Ravens’ moves over the next few months.

MLB Josh Bynes agrees to terms of one-year contract with Ravens

Why it matters: After failing to woo standout free agent Bobby Wagner and already losing Chris Board in free agency, the Ravens needed to add to their inside linebacker roster. It was basically returning starter Patrick Queen, Malik Harrison and Kristian Welch. Harrison will be used in part as an outside linebacker and Welch is primarily a special teams player. If the Ravens weren’t going to get Wagner, bringing Bynes back still made sense as a contingency plan. He had a solid season last year with 76 tackles, two sacks and four passes defended in 14 games (12 starts). Queen’s game improved after Bynes was inserted into the starting lineup. Bynes, an 11-year-old pro, who is in his third stint with the Ravens after they signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2011, is in a leadership role in the Baltimore locker room and is expected to be a good resource for new defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald.
