The Newcastle fan who collapsed in their game against Tottenham is now fully alert and on his feet and walks as he continues his recovery.

He was also named Alan George Smith. Smith, 80, collapsed in the first half of Sunday’s game. The game was suspended while he was receiving emergency medical treatment. Smith was then transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) and then to Freeman Hospital.

Her son, Paul, provided an update. He said: “We are happy to report that Alan is making great progress, is now fully alert and is standing and walking. He will remain in the hospital for the next few days while further tests are done.

“He and our family would like to thank his friend, Don Williamson, who was with him at the time and alerted everyone to his condition.

“We would also like to thank and pay tribute to the doctors and nurses who administered CPR, the paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service, St. John Ambulance, the fans and stewards on the scene, as well as to the medical staff at RVI and Freeman Hospital, we will always be grateful.

“We would also like to thank everyone who wished Alan the best of luck on social media, as well as the players and staff at Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, especially Jamaal Lascelles who sent a personal message. It meant so much. for Alain.

“He can’t wait to get back to St. James’ Park as soon as possible.”
