Squid Game Drives 7,800% Increase in White Van Sneaker Sales

Squid Game has grown so huge that it even inspired a sartorial resurgence of the humble white Vans sneakers.

According to British online retailer Sole Supplier, shoe sales have climbed 7,800% since the Korean dystopian drama premiered on Netflix on September 17.

If you’re one of the few people who isn’t familiar with the Squid Game phenomenon, it centers around a competition in which 456 in debt and desperation souls play children’s games to win the ultimate prize, around $ 50 million.

Each round of elimination does not imply that the losers are kicked off the island, it is far more brutal than that – death.

Competitors are dressed in a forest green track uniform with a stripe and white slip-on sneakers. Not only comfortable, the outfit allows for the range of physical movement needed in a fight for your life.

It might not be necessary to say it, but many pairs of these pristine white sneakers end up splashing blood.

With Halloween coming in a few weeks – which is now a thing outside the United States thanks to the relentless march of American cultural domination – Squid Game fans have put their costumes together.

Amazon sellers capitalizing on the show’s popularity peddled costumes from the show, such as the green tracksuit, even sporting Kang Sae-byeok’s number. The list is already at the top of Amazon’s “women’s suits” ranking.

For fans who prefer to disguise themselves as oppressors rather than victims, there is the option of red jumpsuits paired with fencing masks. Variety reported that searches for red suits have jumped 62% in recent weeks.

Nine days after its release, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos revealed that the series was set to overtake Bridgerton as the streamer’s most-watched original TV show.

The series has topped Netflix’s watch lists worldwide since its release three weeks ago.

The rise in popularity led a South Korean internet service provider to pursue legal action against Netflix for clogging its bandwidth without paying network fees.

It also led to debates online over whether non-Korean speakers would be better off watching the show with an audio dubbing track or subtitles, and whether the show served its female characters with care.
