What is the good nurse?

The official synopsis reads:

Amy, a compassionate nurse and single mother struggling with a life-threatening heart condition, is pushed to her physical and emotional limits by the harsh and demanding night shifts at the ICU. But help arrives when Charlie, a caring and empathetic fellow nurse, starts her unit. While sharing long nights in the hospital, the two develop a strong and devoted friendship, and for the first time in years, Amy has real confidence in her future and that of her young daughters. But after a series of mysterious patient deaths spark an investigation that names Charlie as the prime suspect, Amy is forced to risk her life and the safety of her children to uncover the truth.

The trailer begins and ends with Loughren meeting up with his serial killer friend Cullen at a restaurant, trying to act friendly and cool, while trying to get him to confess to his crimes. “I don’t want to talk about work,” says the stealthy Cullen, to which Loughren asks, “Is it because what they say is true?” The reunion is more than awkward as the trailer shows just how high the stakes are. Loughren is a single mother barely able to pay her babysitter and Cullen is her empathetic and helpful friend, so close that he freely visits Loughren’s home and her young daughters. Her already difficult life becomes downright heartbreaking when the hospital administrator introduces her to detectives. Tim Brown (Noah Emmerich) and Danny Baldwin (Nnamdi Asomugha) who tell him about Cullen’s involvement in the suspicious death of a patient. He spikes the saline bags with lethal doses of insulin, Loughren soon finds out.

From then on, Loughren plays a game of cat and mouse where the stressed cat is way in over his head and the mouse is extremely smart and quiet. “He killed people without ever touching them,” says Detective Baldwin. “He will find a new job and everything will continue.” It becomes clear that all hopes of catching Cullen hinge on Loughren as law enforcement needs evidence that the hospital won’t provide. “The hospital would have done something,” Loughren said in disbelief. To which the detective coldly replies, “You would think so.”

Who are the cast and crew of The Good Nurse?

Jessica Chastain, who plays Amy Loughren, won her first Oscar for playing a televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker in Tammy Faye’s eyes. Eddie Redmayne, who plays Charles Cullen, won his first Oscar for his performance as stephen hawking in The theory of everything.

Not an ardent fan of sensational true crime, Chastain tells Vanity Fair that she preferred to keep things real in The good nurse: “There have been a lot of shows and movies about real crime events which I find a little vulgar – there is a sensationalism of violence and aggression.” Instead, Chastain says, “I wanted to acknowledge someone like Amy. These are the kind of superheroes I want to celebrate because they are everywhere.

In order to prepare for their roles, Chastain and Redmayne reportedly practiced nursing and watched footage of their real-life counterparts. To capture Cullen’s odd posture and mannerisms, Redmayne worked with a movement trainer Alexandra Reynoldswith whom he also worked on The theory of everything. The results are, by all accounts, a complete transformation. To play the heroic nurse whose heart could give out at any moment, Chastain reportedly wore an earpiece during production playing the sound of a heartbeat, which she would request to be turned on when her character was in physical danger.

Apart from the two leads, Noah Emmerich (Americans) and Nnamdi Asomugha (Sylvia’s love) star dogged detectives Tim Braun and Danny Baldwin who attempt to enlist Loughren despite his friendship with Cullen. Kim Dicken (missing girl) also deserves praise for his frigid performance as the risk manager of the ruthless hospital.

The good nurse is directed by renowned Danish director Tobias Lindholm. He is best known for directing the films A diversion (2012) and A war (2015), as well as the true crime series Investigation about Kim Wall, the Swedish journalist who was murdered aboard a submarine. The good nurse was written by Krysty Wilson-Cairn (Last night in Soho) and produced by Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), Scott Franklinand Michael A. Jackman.
