WMU’s AJ Thomas signed by Chicago Bears after rookie mini-camp

Undrafted West Michigan football safety AJ Thomas has seemingly impressed the Chicago Bears’ new coaching staff and front office and was signed this weekend after rookie mini-camp when he ended Sunday morning.

According to a Bears fan site, Thomas is “being worked out as a safety and that will be his position in the NFL … he compares himself to DeAndre Houston-Carson, a player he will be competing against in a few weeks for a spot on the roster Thomas played linebacker last season at WMU, but with his size and speed, teams think Thomas belongs in the NFL’s defensive backfield.

Thomas has a real opportunity here (Thomas has beaten 10 other defensive backs on try) because the Bears’ pass defense was terrible last season; so there are two starting jobs open, although second-round picks Kyler Gordon of Washington and Jaquan Brisker of Penn State are expected to be the opening day starters, but there are several reserve spots for which Thomas is in competition.

Speaking of the Broncos in the NFL, wide receiver Skyy Moore has high expectations for himself, as do the Kansas City Chiefs. When you’re drafted to replace Tyreek Hill and catch passes from Patrick Mahomes, life can seem pretty sweet. The only fly in the ointment is that Moore is currently nursing a hamstring injury, but is expected to be ready for OTAs later this month. Moore says he’s had conversations with Mahomes about the playbook and how the two quickly end up on the same page.
